What Are Animation Deformities?

Every woman’s breasts move as they move. Before their initial breast augmentation, women with very little breast tissue may not notice this motion. However, after breast augmentation, the breast are larger, and normal motion of the breasts may become more apparent.

“Animation effects” is the term for the motion of breasts/implants after breast augmentation. When implants are placed in a submuscular position, the breasts dance a little upwards and outwards with use of the arms. Sometimes there is a little indentation or tugging on the undersurface of the breast or incision at the same time. If the motion is not troublesome, they are called “animations effects.”

Animation deformities (excessive animation) is the term when the motion is troublesome, resulting in:

  • One side animating very differently from the other
  • Marked motion with arm use
  • Indentations of the incisions or undersurface of the breast

When a woman is “on top” during sexual relations, partners may dislike the appearance of excessive animation. I prefer the term excessive animation instead of animation deformities.

Causes of Animation Deformities

Excessive animation occurs when the muscle activity pulls on the overlying breast and breast skin causing unwanted motion or indentations. The muscle action down deep may become visible by pulling on the implant capsule, scar tissue, subcutaneous tissue, or skin.

Procedures to Correct Animation Deformities

The forces of muscle contraction need to be transferred back to the chest wall. This can be done by moving the implant in front of the muscle (subglandular) and reattaching the muscle to the chest wall (ribs). More commonly, the implant remains under the muscle, but the muscle pull is transferred directly to the chest wall using ACD (Strattice™) to bridge over the implant. Either way, the force of muscle tugging directly on the breast or skin on the undersurface of the breast is reduced, which reduces the animation effect.
